About Matheran
Matheran is a car-free hill station and a municipal council located in Karjat taluka, Raigad district, Maharashtra, India. It is part of the Mumbai metropolitan area and is one of the smallest hill stations in India. It is found in the Western Ghats at an altitude of about 800 meters. It is nearly 90 kilometers from Mumbai and 120 kilometers from Pune. The proximity of these urban areas makes it a weekend getaway for many.
There are many Parsi bungalows and hotels in this area. There are many hotels in the center of town, and there are more secluded hotels down the paths away from the central buildings. The locality has preserved the old British colonial architecture. The roads are made of red laterite. Semi-evergreen forests are found in this locality. It contains a large number of medicinal plants and herbs. Several lookout points provide spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
It is connected to Mumbai (100 km) and Pune (120 km) by road and rail, with the nearest station being the hilltop town of Neral. Chhatrapati Shivaji International is the closest airport in Mumbai. There is a narrow-gauge railway station in the center of the city. The historic Marcellan Mountain Railway offers several daily trains to Neral. Taxi services are available from Neral Railway Station to Aman Lodge, while buses run from Neral and Karjat Railway Stations.
